Nsobe Community School

Nsobe School is a rural primary and secondary school located in Masaiti District on
the Copperbelt of Zambia, operating under the NGO, Nsobe Development Trust.
Founded in 2009 out of compassion for children with no access to quality education,
our school began with a vision, a few teachers, and 16 children gathered under the
trees of rural Masaiti. We had no classrooms, no electricity, and no formal resources,
only faith and a calling to make a difference.

Nsobe Community School has grown beyond imagination. It has since become a
fully established Grant-Aided School under the Ministry of Education learning
institution offering education from Early Childhood Education (ECE) to Form 6 in 2025.
Today, we serve over 600 learners supported by a dedicated team of more than 45
teachers, mentors and support staff. Our learners consistently perform above
expectations for a remote rural school, with strong national examination results and
recognition as a model school within the district. Our continued prayer,
perseverance and partnership will strengthen long-term sustainability while
preserving Nsobe’s values, standards, and community focus.

Passionate in our holistic approach to child development beyond the classroom,
Nsobe provides a Christ-centred, values-based education that nurtures academic
excellence, personal development, and practical life skills for children who come
from highly vulnerable and under-resourced backgrounds. Our learners benefit from
a daily feeding programme, strong safeguarding and child protection systems,
leadership development, sports and clubs, ICT education, and life skills and
leadership training. Our Safe Houses also offer a secure, nurturing home for at-risk girls
from remote areas to continue their education safely. Rooted in God’s Word, this firm
foundation instils core values - love for God and others, respect, responsibility and
integrity early in our learners’ lives. It helps shape their worldview, fosters emotional
resilience, and builds a lasting legacy that guides them into adulthood.

National data shows that poverty in Zambia has increased from roughly 54.4% in 2015
to 60% in 2022, with rural poverty nearly 79% compared with about 32% in urban
areas — demonstrating the persistent hardship faced by rural families and their
children. It also shows that although the Copperbelt Province has relatively higher
adult literacy rates compared to other regions in Zambia, 60% of lower primary
school learners in the province continue to face challenges with reading and writing
skills. Beyond that, the introduction of free education in Zambia in 2022 significantly
increased school enrolment by roughly 16%, creating severe overcrowding
challenges in public schools, where some classrooms now hold over 100 learners. This
surge has resulted in inadequate infrastructure, a critical shortage of desks,
compromised, overstretched teaching staff, and a decline in learning quality,
resulting in congested, and, uncomfortable, environments which distract from
effective learning. While we may view this as a "good problem" indicating increased
access, it has created significant challenges in meeting the growing needs of our
learners. Against this backdrop, Nsobe’s focus on nurturing literate, skilled, and hopeful young people remains both timely and essential.

As part of a broader rural development vision, Nsobe School for the Community is
uniquely supported by the Trust’s commercial farm, conservation activities,
vocational skills centre, and safari camp. This integrated model allows students to
gain exposure to practical learning opportunities in agriculture, natural resource
management, tourism, and entrepreneurship - laying the strong foundation for
stewardship, future employment, self-reliance, wealth creation and community
leadership.

We also recognise that lasting impact is only possible through strong partnerships
with those who share our vision for education, dignity, and opportunity for every
child. Through God’s Grace and faithful provision through donor funding and
partnership with the Ministry of Education, Nsobe has been able to continue
educating, feeding, and equipping hundreds of children and families each term.
Together, we can turn obstacles into opportunities, for His glory.

As Nsobe Community School continues this journey, we remain committed to
pressing forward with renewed determination, knowing that the work of transforming
lives in rural Masaiti is neither quick nor easy, but deeply worthwhile. Through Christ at
our centre, perseverance in our mission, faithful stewardship of the resources
entrusted to us, and prayer that guides our daily efforts, we look to the future with
hope. Together, with continued support, collaboration, and faith, we can sustain and
grow this work, ensuring that Nsobe remains a place where vulnerable children are
safeguarded, empowered, and equipped to uplift their families, their communities,
and the nation of Zambia for generations to come.
